Vintage Watch Condition Examination:
This GMT is in great vintage condition consistent with age. The case is strong with some scratches; the case has been lightly polished. The red-back bezel has aged nicely over the years with some wear and scratches. The blue portion shows fading towards the outer edge and the red portion has faded, leaning towards a pinkish color. The matte dial is in great condition with a couple small marks and light patina. The lume on the dial and in the hands has aged to a striking yellow color; some plots have developed small areas of darker patina. The lume in the hands has been color corrected/ relumed to match the color of the lume on the dial; it is close and matches nicely. The hands have developed patina which is not uncommon. The oyster bracelet is in great condition with a bit of stretch between the links. The crystal has some wear.
Description: Rolex GMT-Master 16750
Rolex produced the GMT Master 16750 for about 7 years from 1981 to 1988. During that time, the watch became available with either a glossy or matte dial. The glossy variant had white gold-trimmed indices, while the matte edition did not. The latter matte variant, like this example is more desirable and gives the watch a distinctly vintage look. This reference is considered transitional because Rolex upgraded the movement, it now has a quick-set date, but kept the matte dial and acrylic crystal like the previous reference 1675. Rolex also used open 6s and 9s in the date, adding to the vintage charm.
This example is in overall great condition and has a striking look from the matte dial to a attractively aged lume and bezel. In addition to being a lovely example, this watch comes complete with its full set and the hang-tag even has the corresponding serial number – a detail we always love to see!
We see interest for these matte 16750s increase lately because of the vintage look, but with more modern functionality, the collecting community is waking up to these transitional models.
